A guide for business owners
How do you know whether SEO brings enquiries?
A ranking, a visit and a customer message are different events. A useful report connects them where the evidence allows, explaining what is known, what is missing and what to improve next.
A short measurement chain
| Stage | Possible source | Interpretation limit |
|---|---|---|
| Impression | Search Console and Generative AI reporting | Visibility, not a sale |
| Visit | GA4 and landing pages | Depends on consent, blocking and attribution |
| Action | Successful form, phone or WhatsApp click | A click does not confirm a conversation |
| Qualified enquiry | Enquiry log or CRM | Needs classification by the business |
| Customer | Business records | Needs a reliable link and cancellation tracking |
Define an enquiry before measuring it
A successful form submission differs from clicking Submit. A WhatsApp click differs from receiving a message. Define each event’s name, trigger and verification method. Do not send email addresses, phone numbers or message contents as GA4 event parameters.
Compare like with like
Use equivalent periods, filters and page groups. Separate brand and service searches, languages and devices when there is enough data. Record holidays, site changes and business closures. Average position also changes with the mix of queries; it does not describe every individual term.
What AI search adds
For Google, inspect the Generative AI report where available. Elsewhere, referral traffic and sampled answers are partial evidence: a source is not always passed to the website, and responses vary with the question and context. Keep the query, date and language so observations are repeatable.
Example: from clicks to qualified conversations
Hypothetical example: a report records 20 WhatsApp clicks and the business logs 8 qualified conversations. Count the stages separately: clicks do not confirm conversations, and attributing conversations to SEO requires connecting data. Comparing the stages helps identify what to improve.
A monthly report that supports decisions
- Completed work and the pages affected.
- Changes in visibility, visits and qualified enquiries, with the sample size.
- Missing data and attribution limitations.
- Up to three next priorities, each with a reason and owner.
Frequently asked questions
Can Search Console alone measure conversion?
It can measure search CTR, but not visitors becoming enquiries without activity data and a suitable event definition.
Do falling clicks prove that AI took the traffic?
No. Investigate period, demand, rankings, query mix and result presentation before reaching that conclusion.
Does GA4 capture every customer?
Not necessarily. Consent, blocking, device changes and offline sales limit the picture.
